Ethnic Markets- Part Deux

Hey guys!  Thanks for your comments and for sticking with me and my grocery shopping adventures.  The same weekend hubby and I went to the Russian Supermarket and Farmer's Market, we also went to our local Asian supermarket.  Living in the San Francisco Bay Area has exposed us to a lot of good food, particularly all different kinds of Asian cuisine.  My favorite is Japanese food.  I live for sushi.  I walked through the store on a mission to recreate sushi at home.
First up was the live seafood tank:
I know, the fish are cute.  This store showed the origin and how the fish were raised (farm or wild), allowing the consumer to make his or her decisions.
We also found some interesting juevos:
These pink ones were salted eggs.
I believe these were quail eggs.  We didn't buy any, but I thought they were pretty.  Here is what I did buy:

  • Soy wrappers, dried seaweed for suuuuushi, rice seasoning, canned lychee, 3 types of green tea, rice vinegar (to season sushi rice), miso soup, seaweed soup, ginger, kim chee, and young coconut juice.  MINE, all MINE!

  • Hubby cashed in as well with 2 Cali dungeness crabs, some wild snapper, and some of those shell thingies.  We also got some seaweed salad.  Yum!
You are probably wondering how my sushi turned out...it was delicious and the ugliest little roll you will ever see.  I have a problem with reading directions, but I'm ready to attack it again.   There is something about not overstuffing it, clear plastic wrap, and other directions that I got bored of.

My recs for the Asian Supermarket: Go for the produce- they can get outrageous prices on it, and lots of fun stuff!  I also love tea, rice, seaweed, sauces, fresh seafood, and sake!  Plus all the stuff I got above.

Questions for you: Do you like suuuuushi?  If not, what keeps you away from it?

Buttah

Hope ya'll had a great Tuesday!  Mine was filled with lots of good eats!  It started off well with my big salad:

  • Organic mixed greens
  • Lots of steamed broc
  • Hardboiled egg
  • Carrot fries
  • Spicy sesame dressing
Then I remembered we had carrot cake left, most importantly FROSTING from the carrot cake.  I helped myself to some buttah:

There was an inch of butter with a sliver of cake under.  Woah baby!
After work I met my hubby for some sushi.  Have I mentioned how much I love sushi?  I may even love it more than chocolate.  Maybe.  I've been dreaming of it and was supposed to have some this weekend but had to flake because of homework (sorry bro).  It was dreamy:

  • Caterpillar roll
  • Rainbow roll
  • Poki Maki roll
It was basically amazing.  I am off to bed because I hear rumors that our technically challenged DVR may have recorded an episode of How I Met Your Mother.  My bed, space heater, and my funny bone are all waiting for me.
Ciao bellas!

Sushi Saturday

Hello world!

It's been a crazy few days with work and it's great to have a few free minutes. In fact, the whole day has been a wonderful exhibition of free time. I haven't had such a great day in a long time. We woke up, watched TV, walked to get coffee, and walked to visit our new accountant. I know I sound like a nerd, but going over tax documents with a CPA is more intriguing than a day at work (at least last week).

We also had the best meal we had out in a long time- sushi! Sushi is my favorite food, specifically anything spicy tuna-related. We were busy all afternoon and missed lunch, which is always bad news. I walked out of there stuffed with this great foods.

We ordered a spicy tuna salad- a big blob of spicy tuna on a bed of greens (shared):

Next, we ordered 3 rolls- a DUI roll (spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber, salmon, and some raspberry sauce on the side), a Power Roll (unagi and avocado on some tempura), and a double tuna (spicy tuna with fresh tuna on top):

I ate about 4 pieces of each spicy tuna roll and tried one of the fried rolls, but stuck to my true love. We just got back from another short walk and I think we might be going out tonight(!). I'm off to watch some TV and get ready if we are hitting the town.

Have a great night and I'll be back tomorrow!
